Are Birthday T-Shirts Cool To Give As Gifts?

By Matthew Finn

I went to my best friend's birthday shindig last week. She is an awesome mother of two and just now turning 40. Her family had been incredibly pushy about throwing her a party, even though she really didn't feel up to it. It was such a big mistake on her family's part, because it turned out to be one of those "let's make fun of the lady turning 40" parties that women just love going to.

She wore a strained smile through the whole thing. She was even chided into wearing a birthday shirt that matched the party decorations. I know her quite well because of our long friendship, and I could tell that she was quite upset. What she needed was encouragement about her age, but what she got was nothing like it.

My friend is not alone in feeling bad about 40. Most everyone feels weighted down by time and age when that 40th birthday comes. Seeing it as the start of a slow end is very common. Some are disheartened and others become terrified. If someone you know feels this way, then reconsider buying the birthday t-shirts.

What my friend really wanted was to spend some time with her family and be close to the people she loved while she dealt with something really troubling her. She needed emotional support. For someone who is anxious about getting older, it's sometimes just too difficult to be surrounded by people and be the center of attention. Especially if you're wearing birthday t-shirts that ridicule those feelings.

There are some birthday t-shirts out there that are okay, though. Anything that trivializes or makes fun of the person wearing it should not be bought as a present for anyone. Presents are supposed to make you feel good and remind you of good times. Reminding someone of how bad they feel makes for a terrible gift, wouldn't you agree?

Use your best judgment when it comes to buying birthday t-shirts. Lean more towards shirts that are positive and make people feel better about themselves. If you care enough about someone to buy them a gift, then you should also care enough to buy them something sincere and thoughtful. If a gift is cruel or hurtful, then you should really take a long look at yourself and evaluate your own value as a friend.
